Shannon Veillon, 36, hates clicking through computer menus and being stuck on a telephone. “I can’t stand being put on hold,” said the former Air Force Staff Sergeant with a decade of military service under his belt. “It drives me crazy to be stuck wasting my time,” he said. So Veillon, now a Veteran for 6 years, signed up for the My HealtheVet program as soon as he realized its benefits. “The first thing that sold me on My HealtheVet was the access to my providers’ numbers, and the second thing was the access to my medication information,” said Veillon.
An award-winning Internet-based service, My HealtheVet allows Veterans to take charge of their health by allowing online prescription refills, appointment reminders, access to health information, and the avoidance of duplicate tests and procedures. In the near future, Veterans will also be able to review portions of their VA medical record through the online site. It also provides links to important VA benefits and resources. “My HealtheVet empowers Veterans to become active partners in understanding and managing their health care,” says Intisar Hasaan, communications specialist for the My HealtheVet Program at the VA Maryland Health Care System.
With Secure Messaging, a new encrypted communication tool, Veterans will be able to send and receive messages from their health care team 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Secure Messaging will also help reduce the need for making phone calls since responses are answered within 72 hours or less.
To take advantage of Secure Messaging and other My HealtheVet features, register at www.myhealth.va.gov and complete the In-Person Authentication process. Don’t forget to make a note to visit the site often.
*Patients who already have a My HealtheVet account are urged to visit their local VA health care facility to get an upgraded account known as In-Person Authentication (IPA). For more information about My HealtheVet, call 1-800-463-6295, ext. 7045 or 6073.
