VA Maryland Health Care System Partners with Evergreen Health Care to Improve Access
As part of its aggressive action plan to immediately improve the wait time for new Veteran patients to receive primary care appointments throughout the state, the VA Maryland Health Care System has awarded a one year contract to Evergreen Health Care for up to $485,000. This new partnership with Evergreen Health Care, a Maryland–based non-profit organization founded by Dr. Peter Beilenson, will provide new Veteran patients with a choice to receive primary care services from the VA or in the community. The contract, which can be modified based on need, enables the VA Maryland Health Care system to refer new Veteran patients to Evergreen Health Care for general outpatient care, preventive health and education services, various medical screenings and to coordinate referrals for specialized programs and inpatient services throughout the VA health care system.
“We are pleased to partner with Evergreen Health Care to help reduce the wait time for our new Veteran patients to receive a primary care appointment,” said Dr. Adam M. Robinson, Jr., chief of staff for the VA Maryland Health Care System. “This partnership is a major component of our aggressive action plan to improve patient access and demonstrates our commitment to delivering safe, quality and compassionate care to Maryland’s Veterans.”
The nationwide VA Access Audits conducted earlier this year in response to the allegations of inappropriate scheduling practices at some VA medical centers across the country found no improper scheduling activities throughout the VA Maryland Health Care System, which is a testament to the high ethical standards of the employees throughout the health care system. The data released as a follow-up to the Access Audits showed the VA Maryland Health Care System needed to improve the wait time for new Veteran patients to receive a primary care appointment. As a result, the health care system immediately implemented an aggressive action plan to improve access for new Veteran patients, including hiring additional primary care providers; re-introducing Saturday primary care clinics; partnering with community providers; and reviewing, evaluating, and prioritizing patient needs on a daily basis.
“We have already seen a reduction in the wait time for new Veteran patients to receive a primary care appointment throughout the VA Maryland Health Care System, which indicates that our aggressive action plan is working,” said Dr. Robinson. “This new partnership with Evergreen Health Care will serve as an additional resource to improve access to primary care for new Veteran patients by offering them a choice in the community.”
Founded in 2012, Evergreen Health Care offers primary care facilities in Baltimore, Columbia, White Marsh, and Greenbelt.
"We're honored to have been selected to serve those who have served our country,” said Dr. Peter Beilenson, chairman of the board of Evergreen Health Care. “Providing high-quality, affordable health care to Maryland residents has been Evergreen Health Care’s mission from the very beginning, and working with the VA Maryland Health Care System will provide us an incredible opportunity to do just that."
