“The annual patient carnival is one of the most anticipated recreational events held for our hospitalized Veterans and outpatients,” said Turkessa Johnson, chief of Recreation Therapy at the Perry Point Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. Each year, the facility’s gymnasium is filled with approximately 25 booths, each decorated according to a chosen theme by Recreation Therapy and Voluntary Service staff, along with representatives of local Veterans’ service organizations. This year was no exception with a chosen theme of “In the Garden” that included silk flowers, vines, butterflies, bird ornaments, and artificial trees.

Over 600 inpatients and outpatients, along with their family members, were entertained with music provided by entertainer, Mario Rocco, treated to pizza, popcorn, grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, Rita’s Italian water ice, beverages and fresh fruit. The opportunity to play games and win prizes was also made available thanks to the donations from more than 30 local Veterans’ service and community organizations.

“The annual patient carnival, which was established more than 40 years ago, provides a fun-filled environment where a Veteran can be a kid again,” said Nancy McLaughlin, Recreation Therapy diversional activities coordinator.

Individuals or members of community organizations who are interested in supporting activities for our nation’s hospitalized veterans at the Perry Point VA Medical Center may contact Voluntary Service at 1-800-949-1003, ext. 5409.
