VA Maryland Health Care System Named One of the Best Places to Work for 2011 by Baltimore Magazine
(BALTIMORE, MD) – In the February 2011 issue of Baltimore Magazine the VA Maryland Health Care System was named one of the Best Places to Work, along with 34 other businesses throughout the state. Baltimore Magazine’s Best Places to work issue recognizes businesses based on pay, perks and benefits.
Dennis H. Smith, the director of the VA Maryland Health Care System says, “This is a wonderful achievement that was only made possible thanks to the outstanding pride and commitment of all VA Maryland Health Care System employees.”
In the profile about the VA Maryland Health Care System, the magazine notes, “The pride in one’s mission is something you hear time and again when you talk to staffers, many vets themselves, at Baltimore’s VA Hospital, which is next to the University of Maryland Medical Center. And aside from benefits, pay and perks, that’s something that makes people want to roll out of bed for work in the morning.”
The profile about the VA Maryland Health Care System also cited that “the most defining thing is the sheer number of computers,” noting the health care system’s state-of-the-art computerized patient record system, its innovative virtual reality simulator used to treat Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, and its distinction of having the world’s first filmless radiology department. “There’s no outmoded technology here,” the magazine profile notes.
Baltimore Magazine also says the VA Maryland Health Care System is “beating the bad, old rap of VA hospitals as broken-down places with outdated technology and understaffing—and doing it with a remarkable esprit de corps.”
The VA Maryland Health Care System joins the ranks of AAI Corp., Grant Thornton, The Johns Hopkins University, The Johns Hopkins Hospital & Health Care System, LifeBridge Health, McCormick & Company, Northrop Grumman Corporation, T. Rowe Price, Under Armour and Verizon Wireless, among others, as part of the magazine’s 2011 Best Places to Work honor roll. The health care system also has the unique distinction of being the only Federal agency in Maryland to be named by Baltimore Magazine as one of the Best Places to Work for 2011.
The publication started its Best Places to Work review process eight months ago with a round of calls and news releases to recruiters, business development representatives, community leaders and employees. It then conducted a review of company 401(k) programs, health benefits, career development offerings and more. The VA Maryland Health Care System made it to the final ranking after the lengthy review process.
