VA Maryland Health Care System

Health Watch: Fall Winter 2017-2018

Gender is a Matter of Identity

Gender is a Matter of Identity The VA Maryland Health Care System remains committed to providing quality health care to all Veterans, and we realize that health care sometimes means serving the specific needs of Veterans.

With respect to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community (LGBT), we recognize national policies that guarantee health care access for LGBT Veterans and the right to tell us which gender you identify with. Now, upon patient check-in, Veterans will be asked their Self-Identified Gender Identity (SIGI) by clerks and other administrative staff. The "right" answer to this question is whatever the Veteran says. There is no need for any documentation/verification of either birth sex or SIGI. Since all Veterans have a birth sex and a gender identity, it is important that these fields are completed for all Veterans.

The SIGI field roll-out is a multi-stage process which started in May 2017. SIGI will be available on all check-in kiosks as well.
