Why Choose VA: Accomplishing Goals

U.S. Navy Veteran Gary Warren can keep up with his grandson thanks to joining the VA’s MOVE! fitness program and other exercise programs designed specifically for older Veterans.

At every doctor’s visit, Gary’s VA primary care provider encouraged him to join the VA’s MOVE! fitness program. “I had a beer belly even though I didn’t drink alcohol,” he says. “After a year I decided to go ahead and try it out, to get rid of my gut.” But Gary didn’t stop there. When the VA Maryland Health Care System started offering a new exercise program designed specifically for older Veterans, called Gerofit, he didn’t need any encouragement this time. “I signed up and started going to class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday,” he says. “I lost a whole bunch of weight and I feel 100 percent better.” Today Gary proudly wears his size 34 jeans and is training to compete in the National Veterans Golden Age Games. More important, he’s living and loving life, and is able to keep up with his 12-year old grandson, Connor.
