VA Maryland Health Care System
MyHealtheVet Turns 10 Years
Throughout the month of November, the VA Maryland Health Care System will join the nation’s 151 VA medical centers to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the award winning My HealtheVet online personal health record (PHR). This unique web-based service allows Veterans to take charge of their health.
For a decade, VA has advanced the notion of Veteran patients maintaining, managing and tracking their own PHRs via My HealtheVet, enabling them to be more informed and engaged participants in their own health. Just ask Shannon Veillon, the former Air Force Staff Sergeant with a decade of military service under his belt, who hates clicking through voice mail menus and being stuck on a telephone. "I can’t stand being put on hold. It drives me crazy to be stuck wasting my time." So when Veillon learned about the My HealtheVet program from his doctor at the Baltimore VA Medical Center, he checked it out, and "signed up as soon as I realized its benefits, which was immediate."
"The first thing that sold me on it was the improved access to my providers, and the second thing was the improved access to my medication information," he said. "My health information is available whenever I want it, and I can print it out and bring it with me whenever I need it."
VA has continued to build the site, adding new online tools and features including Secure Messaging, a function that enables Veterans to communicate directly with their primary care physicians in between office visits. Aside from the ability to communicate directly with clinicians, Veterans using the My HealtheVet website can refill VA prescriptions online. With a premium account, Veterans can view upcoming appointments, receive wellness reminders, and use the VA Blue Button to view, save or print parts of their VA health record to include laboratory test results, VA notes, medication lists and much more. Designed for Veterans to partner with their providers to manage their health care, My HealtheVet also provides links to VA benefits and the Veterans Health Library. "My HealtheVet empowers Veterans to become active partners in understanding and managing their health care," says Intisar Hasaan, the My HealtheVet coordinator at the VA Maryland Health Care System. To date, more than 34,100 Veterans throughout the VA Maryland Health Care System have registered for My HealtheVet.
"VA is dedicated to providing Veterans with the best experience possible, both at VA facilities and online," said Theresa Hancock, director, My HealtheVet National Program. "We are encouraging Veterans, Service members, and their loved ones—and everyone—to get online at www.myhealth.va.gov during November and throughout the year," she added.
To use Secure Messaging and certain other features of My HealtheVet, register online at www.myhealth.va.gov and complete the In Person Authentication (IPA). "IPA takes just a few minutes and requires the Veteran to present a picture ID for verification," said Hasaan. Become an active partner in your health care today and log on to the My HealtheVet site.
