What started out as a normal day for several hospitalized Veterans turned into an event to remember thanks to some special visitors at the Baltimore VA Medical Center on November 14. Former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith, along with Ravens Cheerleaders and the Ravens mascot, Poe, paid a visit to Veteran inpatients to show their appreciation for the Veterans’ service.
Speaking with WMAR-2 News, Smith said: “My father was in the military so I understand the importance of the VA to him. So to be here hanging with them knowing the challenges that they still face even through they may not be in service, what they did it just can't be done in vain. It's important for us to continue to take are of them, they're real-life heroes."
“Events like these show just how appreciative the community is of their service,” said Dr. Adam M. Robinson, Jr., director of the VA Maryland Health Care System, in an interview with WBAL-TV News.
The Ravens Cheerleaders has also visited the Baltimore VA Medical Center a few days earlier, greeting Veterans as they arrived for medical appointments and helping to distribute Veterans Day pins. Both visits preceded the Ravens’ Salute to Service game on November 17 during which military Veterans and active duty service members were honored.
