The VA Maryland Health Care System is pleased to announce the development of the Medical Foster Home Program to serve the growing needs of the Veteran population.

Medical Foster Home Benefits:

• The Medical Foster Home provider is an alternative to long-term care services for Veterans who are medically fragile
• Delays or eliminates the need for institutionalization when Veterans do not have family able to meet their needs
• Provides long-term care and companionship for Veterans

What the Medical Foster Home Provides to Veterans:

• Improve overall quality of life for Veterans who cannot remain safely in their home due to physical limitations or disabilities
• An affordable option to nursing home settings (The cost per month is dependent on the level of care the Veteran requires)
• Care includes room and board, 24 hour, seven day a week supervision, medication management and assistance with daily living skills
• A signed agreement between caregiver, Veteran ,family member or legal representative to define cost of services provided to the Veteran
• Veteran must meet income requirements to pay for services
  

Medical Foster Home Environment:

• Furnished private/semi private rooms
• 24 hour, seven day a week supervision
• One to three Veterans live in the home at a time
• Meals, laundry and cleaning
• Personal care (dressing, grooming, bathing, etc.)
• Medication management

Medical Foster Home Caregiver:

• Caregivers must have a license issued by the State of Maryland to operate and complete annual trainings
• Caregivers must pass annual inspections by the VA inspection teams
• Caregivers must be willing to have background checks
• Caregivers must be able to read, write and speak English
• Caregivers must reside in the owned or rented home
• Caregivers must be at least 21 years old, financially stable, and have some formal/ informal care giving experience
• Caregivers must have good problem solving skills
• Caregivers must be physically able to provide needed care
• Caregivers ensures a safe and friendly home like environment
• Caregivers must be willing to work with the Home Care Team
