June 6, 2008 Susan Brooks, a resident of Owings Mills, Md., is the bronze winner of the 2008 Excellence in Federal Career Award for Outstanding Supervisor. Brooks, the nurse manager for specialty outpatient clinics at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, was nominated because of her superior career track, outstanding performance and dedication to veteran patients. The Annual Excellence in Federal Career Awards, sponsored by the Baltimore Federal Executive Board (FEB), is held each year during Public Service Recognition Week. This is the only government-wide awards program in Maryland that provides an opportunity for federal agencies to honor all levels of civilian and military service members for their exceptional work and service. Brooks, a nurse manager at the Baltimore VA Medical Center since 2001, has routinely exceeded established standards for providing access to timely care for patients. She also demonstrates great ingenuity and leadership through projects such as the initiation of an infusion clinic that saves the health care system $96,000 each year. An active member of her professional community, Brooks provided her expertise and knowledge to committees that have developed national moderate sedations competencies, which meet Veterans Health Administration and Joint Commission standards. Additionally, she actively contributed to the Colorectal Cancer Care Collaborative, which decreased unnecessary delays and increased adherence to evidence-based care in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of colorectal cancer-related patients. Brooks is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing where she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1995. She received her master of science degree in nursing administration from the University of Maryland in 2005. Brooks is also a recent graduate of a VA Regional Leadership Development Institute program in 2006. |
