Partnership Brings New Life to Veterans History Project

The members of AmeriCorps*NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps), located at the Perry Point VA Medical Center, have partnered with the VA Maryland Health Care System to collect the stories and experiences of America’s war veterans for the Veterans History Project, a national initiative that has been implemented by the Library of Congress.

There are 19 million war veterans living in the United States today, but every day we lose 1,700 of them. Motivated by a desire to honor our nation’s war veterans for their service and to collect their stories and experiences while they are still among us, the United States Congress created the Veterans History Project.

To help capture the unique military stories and experiences of Maryland’s veterans, AmeriCorps is working with the Office of Voluntary Service to coordinate interviews with veteran inpatients and outpatients throughout the VA Maryland Health Care System.

Joseph Cook, Director of Projects and Training for AmeriCorps*NCCC, says, “The exciting fact about this new group is that each member, in addition to his/her regularly scheduled daily service project assignments, has volunteered on his/her own time, be it in the evening or on weekends, to participate in the Veterans History Project.”

To learn more about the Veterans History Project and how you can volunteer to assist with this new initiative, please contact Susan Kern at (410) 605-7102.
