Mr. Smith was appointed Director of the VA
Maryland Health Care System on May 28,
1995. He was responsible for the successful
integration of Maryland's the
three VA healthcare facilities, which include the Baltimore, Fort Howard and
Perry Point VA Medical Centers. He is also responsible for the management of
the 120 bed Baltimore VA Rehabilitation and Extended Care Center and five Community
Based Outpatient Clinics located throughout the state.
Mr. Smith is a native of Baltimore and was born on November
17, 1946. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business
Administration from the University of Maryland, College Park;
Master of Business Administration from Loyola College, Baltimore,
Maryland; and Master of Hospital Administration from George
Washington University, Washington, D.C. He joined the VA
in 1973 at the Washington D.C., VA Medical Center as an administrative
resident. Since that time, he has served at various levels
within the Veterans Health Administration in senior administrative
positions. Prior to being appointed as the Director of the
VA Maryland Health Care System, he was the Chief of Staff
to the Under Secretary for Health.
An active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives,
Mr. Smith has also been appointed to the Board of Directors
of two noteworthy charitable organizations, the United Way
of Central Maryland and the Maryland Homeless Veterans, Incorporated.
Additionally, he has also been appointed to the Maryland
Hospital Association Council on Integrated Health Care Delivery.
